Friday, May 2, 1997 Laurel, Maryland STM&P Sponsors Network Engineer's Toolkit Website STM&P has created a Website which will serve as a resource for networking professionals. The Network Engineer's Toolkit Website located at http://www.stmp.com/wanresources offers information on most of the popular wide area networking protocols in use today. In addition to brief descriptions of these protocols including SNA/SDLC, TCP/IP, X.25, SMDS, Frame Relay, and ATM, the site gives pictorial views of each protocol's formats. The various fields within the protocol formats feature links to descriptions of their function within the protocol. The Network Engineer's Toolkit Website also offers estimators which can be used to make "back-of-the-envelope" calculations on problems which a network designer typically confronts. There are estimators to calculate overheads associated with protocols, to calculate line utilizations, to calculate delay getting into the network, and to calculate getting across a network link. Of course, the Network Engineer's Toolkit Website also features links to other resources of interest to networking professionals including service providers, vendors of equipment, and publishers of telecommunications news and information. "I first came up with the idea for the Network Engineer's Toolkit Website when one of our clients was trying to size a data communications link," said Carlton Rice, President of STM&P. "In my consulting business, I found myself constantly looking up protocol specifics or trying to remember how much overhead was associated with a particular protocol. I thought that a Network Engineer's Toolkit might be a great application for the Web." The estimators are coded in PERL and take advantage of the CGI capabilities available via most Web browsers. STM&P developed the site in conjunction with Digital Imagery and VisionFactory. Both companies provide multimedia solutions for small and large businesses including graphics design, animation, and video production. "I developed the content for the site and these two companies helped me implement it by coming up with the custom graphics and HTML/PERL coding, and CGI scripting." said Rice. "Their ability to quickly translate my idea into a professional looking Website was fantastic." In the future, the companies hope to incorporate additional applications, estimators, and other information content that would be of interest to networking professionals. The Website went online on April 25, 1997. For more information or to discuss this press release, Contact STM&P.
